Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.
The one-time leader was sentenced of plotting a government overthrow in last fall and sentenced more than a 27-year term in prison, but he was staying under house arrest pending court reviews.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after recent developments were revealed.
This involved trying to remove his ankle monitor and a invitation to a demonstration that could "allow for a possible escape.
Judicial Records Show Escape Risks
In a filing authorising the arrest, the judge said data from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the former leader's aim to disable the tracking monitor to ensure success in his escape.
This, it said, would be made easier by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his child.
His offspring, his son Flávio, who serves as a legislator, called for a gathering of his backers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday evening.
Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on the previous day: Will you battle for your country, or observe everything from your phone there on your sofa? I urge you to struggle with us."
He said the demonstration would be so supporters could "pray for his physical condition and for the return of democracy in our land."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of the judge's determination was the chance of his transfer to diplomatic missions near the residence, considering that the inquiries revealed a background of organizing to request asylum through a embassy office", a declaration said.
The judicial paperwork highlights that the American diplomatic mission in the capital, Brazil's capital, is situated around 13km from Bolsonaro's home.
Worldwide Consequences
Bolsonaro's legal woes have provoked anger from fellow right-wing populist American leader Donald Trump, causing him to implement a half-rate duty on goods coming from Brazil.
He is being kept in a federal law enforcement building in Brasilia and will undergo a imprisonment assessment on the next day.
Recent Legal Requests
It was only on last Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Top Court to allow him to fulfill his full incarceration period under domestic detention, with electronic monitoring.
They also requested that Bolsonaro be permitted to depart his residence for medical treatment, saying he demanded frequent medical attention for lung conditions and other ailments.
Details of Guilty Verdict
Bolsonaro was found guilty of leading a scheme aimed at retaining his authority after he lost the presidential race to his political opponent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a plan which encompassed plans to kill his opponent and his VP candidate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been overseeing his judicial proceedings.
The conspiracy was stopped because it didn't receive the backing of the army and air force commanders. His successor was sworn in without problem on 1 January 2023.
But a week later, on January 8th, numerous his backers invaded and destroyed government buildings in the federal district, Brasília.
The security forces intervened and around fifteen hundred individuals were arrested.
The justices found that the demonstrators had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose plan, they said, was for the national armed forces to step in, bring back stability and return him to office.
At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the over 27-year sentence extremely harsh.
He was also prohibited from campaigning for office until 2060 - eight years after the completion of his term.
The one-time head of state called the trial a "witch hunt and said it was designed to prevent him running in the next presidential race.
