The McLaren driver edged out fellow driver and championship contender Oscar Piastri for the top spot in the closing stages of practice at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix. Norris, who grabbed the points lead from Piastri by one point after his victory in the Mexican Grand Prix recently, outpaced the Australian by a tiny margin of 0.023secs. Earlier in the session, Oscar Piastri had been the quickest of the McLaren pair for most of the session before sprint qualifying set to begin at 18:30 GMT. The Red Bull star, the only other driver in realistic title contention, lying with a 36-point deficit behind Norris, was classified in 17th position as his Red Bull team opted for a unique setup. His teammate the Japanese driver was the only driver to crash, though minor, when he lost control at corner four soon after starting. The Japanese lost control over the track edges before spinning across the escape zone, and was fortunate to escape with just a light touch of the barrier. The Ferrari of Lewis Hamilton also lost it, at the final moments of the session, turning around through the high-speed Mergulho corner before the final bend on to the start-finish straight. The seven-time champion wrapped up in 19th, trailing teammate the Monegasque driver. Norris and Piastri were far ahead of the rest of the field, with the German's Sauber in third, over half a second off Piastri's best. The Aston Martin of the Spanish driver was fourth fastest, with Sauber's Bortoleto in front of Mercedes' George Russell and Alpine's Pierre Gasly and Williams' Carlos Sainz.
